If you are not already you should be reading the newsletter or stopping by the website for the Institute for Justice (www.ij.org). This is the nation’s only libertarian public interest law firm. Their stated mission includes:
“<litigation> to secure economic liberty, school choice, private property rights, freedom of speech and other vital individual liberties, and to restore constitutional limits on the power of government. <The> IJ challenges the ideology of the welfare state and illustrates and extends the benefits of freedom to those whose full enjoyment of liberty is denied by government.”
A quick review of their February 2013 newsletter shows their efforts to combat civil liberties violations affecting us locally in Georgia. The IJ successfully defended local Atlanta vendor Larry Miller and his small business outside of Turner Field against the City of Atlanta’s monopoly business practices. The IJ is also in the fight against Civil Forfeiture. This is a serious threat in right here in Georgia.
“Civil forfeiture laws represent one of the most serious assaults on private property rights in the nation today. Under civil forfeiture, police and prosecutors can seize your car or other property, sell it and use the proceeds to fund agency budgets–all without so much as charging you with a crime.” – Forbes.com (1.)
The IJ is at the tip-of-the-spear in the fight for your civil liberties. They are clearly great Americans who are not afraid to let freedom win.
